So What about Sidings?

Like roofing, siding has two very important purposes.

First

Siding has to protect you and your home against all types of weather and climate.  It has to perform flawlessly against wind-driven rain and snow and protect against the heat and humidity of the summer.  It must be able to protect the structure from moisture, insects and UV rays.

Second

Of course protecting you from the outside is secondary for most to beauty that it is supposed to add to the look of your home.  Colors, textures, patterns, materials and overall look of a siding are the features that will define your house.

Sidings are made in a variety of materials, shapes and sizes all contributing to the material cost and the relative ease and expense of installation and ongoing maintenance.

Ready to side your house? Let's talk about a few aspects –

Your Needs

If your main concern is to deal with low maintenance, we need to be talking about composite or vinyl sidings.

Wood sidings, though attractive and historically accurate, require a lot of maintenance to keep them looking their best. For many this is not an option – they want a nice look but basically want to forget about it and go on with the other areas of living and not devote much time to siding after the initial installation.

Remember though, even low maintenance sidings will require some attention now and then to retain their good looks.

In our previous siding overview we listed reasons why one might choose one type of siding over another. Here we will focus more on the performance characteristics, uses, and pro's and con's of each type of siding commonly being used today.

Pine Clapboards

Attractive siding – comes in a variety of widths and is quite a bit less expensive than it's widely used sibling cedar.

Pine offers a historic appearance on the wall but is a high maintenance product prone to rot when introduced to moisture prone areas. Most structures suffer from excessive moisture on at least one wall and once softened by moisture, sidings of this type are fair game to boring insects such as termites and carpenter ants who find the softened pulp in the wood easy mining.
